The SMPTE currently serves nearly 10,000 members in 72 countries. Members of the Society are engineers, technical directors, cameramen, editors, technicians, and consultants; specialists in film processing, production and post-production; and practitioners from almost every other discipline in the motion-imaging industry.

The Society was founded in 1916, as the Society of Motion Picture Engineers (SMPE). The "T" was added in 1950 to embrace the emerging television industry. The SMPTE is now recognised around the globe as a leader in the development of standards and authoritative, consensus-based engineering guidelines to the worldwide marketplace. The Society serves all branches of film, video, multimedia, and computer imaging. The SMPTE supports the belief that by providing educational programs and promoting an exchange of technological information, members can advance in their profession and help to contribute to general understanding about the importance on industry technologies.

To accomplish its technical mission, the SMPTE organizes annual conferences as well as select educational forums, including seminars and tutorials. It also publishes the highly-respected SMPTE Journal, recognized around the world for its well-researched technical papers, tutorials, articles on practical applications, standards updates, and reports on SMPTE Sections activities.
